이 책의 특징은 다음과 같다:

1. 이 책은 한국어능력시험 초급(TOPIK I) 취득을 위해 한국어를 공부하는 외국인을 위해 개발되었다. 이 책은 학습자가 혼자 한국어능력시험을 준비하는 자습서로 사용될 수도 있고, 한국어능력시험을 대비하는 강좌의 교재로도 사용될 수 있도록 개발되었다.
2. 이 책은 새로운 유형으로 실시되는 한국어능력시험의 신경향에 맞춰 개발되었다.
이를 위해 이전에 시행된 문제들을 분석하여 새로운 유형에 맞게 모의고사의 문제를 구안하였다.
3. 이 책에 활용된 어휘와 문법은 국내에서 출간된 한국어 교재의 초급을 분석하여 추출된 것들이다. 그리고 문제의 내용은 초급 교재의 소재를 활용하면서 초급의 범위 내에서 시사적이면서도 교양적인 소재를 다루었다.
