Contradiction (모순) is a bestselling Korean novel by Yang Gui-ja about a young woman who weighs love against security while deciding whom to marry.
It is a standalone novel, first published in 1998, and has remained a long-time bestseller in Korea.
Twenty-five-year-old An Jin-jin watches the opposite lives of two identical-twin sisters: her mother, worn down by a hard marriage to an absent, alcoholic husband, and her aunt, married to a successful architect yet quietly suffocated by a comfortable, uneventful life. As Jin-jin chooses between two very different suitors, the novel examines the contradictions of everyday life, love versus security, family, and the choices open to women. It is written in plain, fast-moving prose, with each chapter ending on a hook.
Recommended level: advanced learners, around TOPIK levels 5–6. This is original Korean fiction for adult readers, not a graded reader, but its clear, direct style and everyday subject matter make it one of the more approachable Korean novels at this level. Expect idiomatic language, family and social vocabulary, and some 1990s cultural context. A motivated upper-intermediate reader (TOPIK 4) can take it on with a dictionary; advanced readers will follow it comfortably.
